I-49 work to shut lanes in Johnson

Work on Interstate 49 in the Washington County town of Johnson will require overnight lane closures on Johnson Mill Boulevard for four days beginning Tuesday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The installation of a safety platform for bridge work above Johnson Mill will require the eastbound and westbound lanes to be alternately reduced to one lane between the east and west I-49 access ramp intersections from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Sept. 12, weather permitting. Traffic on I-49 will not be affected, the department said.

The work and lane closures originally were scheduled to take place this week.

The work is part of a $28.3 million project to widen I-49 from four lanes to six lanes on a 4.5-mile section between U.S. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412 in Springdale. It is part of the department's $1.8 billion Connecting Arkansas Program, a road construction program financed in part by a temporary one-half percentage point increase in the state sales tax approved by voters in 2012 and in place for 10 years.
