Popular Latin American entertainer visits AMP

The Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion in Rogers is not forgetting to cater to the Spanish-speaking community of Northwest Arkansas right before the Hispanic Heritage Month festivities.

One of the most beloved entertainers in Latin America, Pedro Fernandez, will come to the AMP's stage Saturday for an evening of the ballads and mariachi that characterize him in the Latin music mainstream.

Fernandez was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1969 and started his career as a child actor/singer.

He used to be billed with the diminutive "Pedrito Fernandez" in the early 1980s when he starred in his film debut "La Niña de la Mochila Azul" ("The Girl With the Blue Backpack"), which stole the hearts of many Latin America tweens of the era with its melodramatic script and a title track to match its schmaltziness.

In the 1990s, when Fernandez became the adult "Pedro," he built on his former tween fan base and gained even more fame with his hugely popular mariachi pop ballad "Mi Forma De Sentir" ("My Way of Feeling").

He has also had prominent roles in numerous "telenovelas," the Spanish soap operas that dominate Latin American nighttime television, something he has continued to do with the recently concluded "Hasta el fin del mundo" ("Until the End of Time").

Fernandez will come to Rogers with another Mexican entertainer, Ninel Conde, nicknamed "The Killer Marshmallow" because of her best known song, "El Bombón Asesino," the title track of her 2006 cumbia-pop album that topped the Latin charts upon its release.
