ASU linebacker arrested for outstanding warrant

The arrest of an Arkansas State linebacker Monday on an outstanding warrant stemmed from a minor in possession of alcohol charge from more than a year ago, according to the Craighead County District Court clerk.

Xavier Woodson, a junior, was charged with minor in possession July 19, 2014, while in a car that was being driven by former ASU linebacker A.J. Turner, who was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license and hazardous driving. Woodson was issued a $105 fine, $100 in court costs and sentenced to 20 hours of community service.

A warrant was issued Aug. 18 when Woodson’s community service was not completed, and he was arrested on that warrant early Monday morning. During a court hearing later Monday his community service was continued until Nov. 16.

Woodson has been suspended for ASU’s first two games this season, Coach Blake Anderson said following Wednesday’s practice. Woodson started all 13 games last season and recorded 95 tackles while earning All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention honors.

Anderson said Thursday that ASU’s coaches were aware of the alcohol charge when it occurred.

“We knew of that last year,” Anderson said. “He was, to be honest with you, in the wrong place at the wrong time. There was discipline back then.”

Anderson also said the missed community service “slipped everybody’s mind, his and ours.”
