• The cold wave which ushered in the month of September is to be broken by warmer temperatures tomorrow in Arkansas, according to H.S. Cole, section director of the United States Weather Bureau. The mercury today was showing a tendency to go up throughout the country, showers occurring along the Atlantic coast, and heavy rains being recorded at points in the Carolinas and Georgia. Fair weather is on the boards for Arkansas, however.

• Officials of the Little Rock School District expressed concern today over the current lag in voter registration. "You can still register through this coming Tuesday to vote in the Sept. 28 school elections," Russell Matson Jr., president of the board, reminded prospective voters. "Some may be under the impression that the last day to register for the city bond election was also the last day to register for the school election. This is not correct and it is urgent that those who have not yet registered do so now and through next Tuesday."

MOUNTAIN VIEW -- Prosecuting Attorney Don McSpadden of Batesville said this week he won't press charges against four Stone County residents -- three of them officials -- found looking into a ballot box that was supposed to be sealed. "All of that is just a bunch of scuttlebutt going around up there," McSpadden said Thursday. McSpadden's comments came four days after Circuit Judge John Dan Kemp of Mountain View ordered the confiscation of the ballot boxes from primary and runoff elections in Franklin Township.

• Soaring gasoline prices have spurred talk of expanding Central Arkansas Transit Authority bus service to Conway, Benton and Cabot. Civic leaders believe high gas prices could help build support for a dedicated source of funding for the bus service, which now relies on grants from Pulaski County and its cities as well as federal aid. Officials from the three cities plan to sit down with CATA officials in the next two weeks to explore options for an express service between their cities and Little Rock. Betty Wineland, marketing director for CATA, said her agency welcomes the requests, which she said reflects a flood of calls and e-mails to the agency inquiring about bus routes.
