DRIVE AWAY HUNGER

Fun at the Foodbank

Youngsters join grown-ups in merriment during annual fundraiser

It was difficult to tell whether the adults or the children were having the most fun at Arkansas Foodbank's second annual Drive Away Hunger, a family-oriented benefit that took place Sept. 26 at the agency's southwest Little Rock warehouse. There were plenty of opportunities inside and out for all.

There was a barbecue dinner from Whole Hog Cafe, accented with frozen treats from the Loblolly Creamery food truck. The grown-ups went on to taste craft beers from several local sources and enjoy entertainment by The B Flats. Children's activities consisted of rides in Joey the Friendly Fire Truck, an inflatable slide and bounce house, puppet shows by Jan Wolfe, various games, face painting ... and a chance to hobnob with Darth Vader, a storm trooper and R2-D2 from "long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away."

A short program included remarks from agency chief executive officer Rhonda Sanders as well as event co-chairmen Amy and Dow Brantley.

In addition, a check for $5,300 was presented to the agency from Central Arkansas Fermenters -- money raised during that organization's Rocktoberfest event. Drive Away Hunger itself drew close to $50,000, estimates Arkansas Foodbank spokesman Tyler Lindsey.
