Chain's donated meals up to 1 million

Tacos 4 Life recently reached 1 million donated meals. The Conway-based restaurant opened its third location at 1572 N. College Ave. in Fayetteville in September. The other two locations are in Conway.

The company donates 22 cents to the nonprofit organization Feed My Starving Children for every taco, quesadilla, burrito, salad or rice bowl sold. Since opening in June 2014, Tacos 4 Life has raised 595,525 meals for starving children. Pitza 42, owners Austin and Ashton Samuelson's first meal-for-meal restaurant, donated 412,681 meals. The Samuelsons converted Pitza 42 to Tacos 4 Life in March.

Feed My Starving Children sends the meals to Children's Cup, an organization in Swaziland and Honduras whose mission is "to change the world for hurting and forgotten children by giving them hope in the love of Jesus Christ."

The two Conway locations send meals to Swaziland and the Fayetteville site sends meals to Honduras.

Architects selected for new hospital

Arkansas Children's Hospital selected two architectural firms to design its campus in Springdale: FKP Architects of Houston and Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects of Fayetteville and Little Rock.

Marcy Doderer, Arkansas Children's Hospital president and CEO, announced the new facility Aug. 7. The project represents an estimated investment of $184 million over the next five years.

David and Cathy George Evans, Gary and Robin George and their families donated 37 acres along Interstate 49 in Springdale between Don Tyson Parkway and U.S. 412, across the street from Arvest Ballpark.

The proposed 225,000-square-foot facility will have 24 inpatient beds, an emergency department/urgent care center with 21 exam rooms, 30 clinic exam rooms, five operating rooms, imaging capabilities, diagnostic services and a helipad with refueling station.

Stroke program awarded certification

Washington Regional Medical Center recently earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.

Washington Regional underwent an on-site review in September in which Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements, including program management, the delivery of clinical care and performance improvement.

The Joint Commission is an independent, nonprofit organization that sets standards and accredits health care facilities.

Washington Regional expanded its Northwest Arkansas Neuroscience Institute last year, adding a stroke neurologist and three neurosurgeons to its already highly skilled team and building an innovative hybrid operating suite dedicated primarily to the treatment of stroke and other brain disorders.

NW residency program now accredited

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences received accreditation Sept. 23 for an internal medicine residency program at its Northwest Arkansas campus in Fayetteville from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

The first eight physicians will arrive in July to serve their residencies at Mercy Health System Northwest Arkansas in Rogers and at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville. The postgraduate program will admit eight physicians annually for a three-year specialized residency where they will strengthen their skills caring for patients under supervision of experienced physician specialists.

The residents also will see patients at a new clinic on campus opening for the program next year.

The medical school already has 30 family-medicine and two psychiatry resident physicians in the region. The regional campus also has 201 students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and the allied health professions -- including the first 24 students in the physical therapy program that started classes in August.

Internal-medicine specialist Dr. Thomas Schulz became the program's director in January. He said he expects the program will start receiving applications from fourth-year medical students soon.
