GOLF

Arkansas Open begins today

Players in open and senior divisions will tee off today in the 42nd annual Arkansas Open at Burns Park Golf Course in North Little Rock. The 36-hole tournament will conclude Sunday afternoon.

Zack Fischer of Little Rock is the defending champion, winning the 2014 championship by three strokes over three others. Fischer also won the tournament in 2011 and is now competing on the Web.com Tour.

Past champions include six-time Arkansas State Golf Association Player of the Year Wes McNulty (2006) and PGA Tour veterans Ken Duke (1995, 1998) and Glen Day (1988, 1989, 1992 and 2012).

Arkansas State, Georgia State tie

Jordan Adams scored for the Red Wolves in the sixth minute as Arkansas State played Georgia State to a 1-1 tie Friday at the Arkansas State Soccer Park in Jonesboro. Katie Flynn assisted on the goal.

Georgia State answered with a goal by Catlin Ray in the 81st minute with an assist by Jenna Moore.

Georgia State (8-1-3, 2-0-1 Sun Belt Conference) outshot Arkansas State (2-9-1, 0-2-1) 17-7. Amanda Lee made seven saves for Arkansas State.

UAPB tops Alabama A&M

Ciera Fenwick scored two goals to lead UAPB to a 5-0 victory over Alabama A&M Friday night in Pine Bluff.

Fenwick's goals came in the 46th minute and 64th minute.

Karaissa Fenwick, Nathalisa Canzalez and Jordan Knorr also scored for the Lady Lions.

UAPB (3-6, 2-1 SWAC) outshot Alabama A&M (0-7, 0-2) 28-7. Makayla Cowles made four saves for UAPB.

VOLLEYBALL

Arkansas State sweeps La.-Lafayette

Drew Jones led Arkansas State with 13 kills while Carlissa May and Darby Graff had 11 as the Red Wolves defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 25-13, 25-17, 25-13 Friday night in Lafayette, La.

Mallory Warrington had 40 assists and 10 digs as the Red Wolves improved to 14-1 overall and 5-0 in the Sun Belt Conference. Markie Schaedig had 18 digs. The Red Wolves had 12 blocks with Kelsey Reis leading the way with eight.

Harding sweeps UAPB

Molly Howard led Harding with 13 kills as the Lady Bison swept UAPB 27-25, 25-10, 25-12 Friday in Searcy.

Abigail Glosup had 31 assists for Harding (7-10). Anna Leigh Cargile had 11 digs.

UAPB (3-16) was led by Natalie Gibbs, who had six kills and Katy Hufnogel with 19 assists.

Arkansas Tech tops UAM

Haley Owen had 11 kills and Sarita Stegall had 41 assists to lead Arkansas Tech (11-5, 5-0 Great American Conference) to a 25-18, 25-11, 20-25, 25-20 victory over Arkansas-Monticello Friday at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

Madison Nagel had 14 digs for the Golden Suns.

Arkansas-Monticello is now 6-6 overall and 1-4 in the GAC.

Lyon loses to William Woods

Despite 10 kills from Madison Sandborn and 30 assists from Emily Sprick, Lyon College lost 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 to William Woods Friday night in Batesville.

Lyon (7-8, 3-3 American Midwest Conference) hosts Park (Mo.) at 6 p.m. today.
