ROGERS -- Rogers High wanted to keep the Rogers Heritage offense off the field and the Mounties offense did just that.

Rogers had a pair of 73-yard scoring drives in the first half and the Mounties rushed for 306 yards in a convincing 28-6 win over the War Eagles Friday night in Whitey Smith Stadium.

Rogers (1-4, 1-1 7A-West) led 21-6 at halftime after rolling up 189 yards rushing. The Mounties then put the game out of reach when quarterback Joseph Sultemeier rushed in from the one for his second touchdown of the night with 1 minute, 47 seconds left in the third quarter.

"We did an outstanding job of sustaining long drives," said Rogers coach Shawn Flannigan. "We kept their offense off the field, and we said that was a key. We burned a lot of clock."

Milacio Freeland led the Rogers' rushing attack with 98 yards on 11 carries. Grayson Lee added 75 yards on eight carries while Sultemeier added 55 yards on 17 attempts.

"The ball was distributed well among a lot of people," Flannigan said.

Heritage finished with 155 yards of offense, 81 on the ground and 74 yards through the air on 9-of-16 passing. Rogers senior Jay Young blocked a punt on the War Eagles first possession of the game and he ended the second possession with an interception.

"We just didn't get it done, offensively," said Heritage coach Perry Escalante. "We started off with a blocked punt, and it just went down hill from there."

Rogers' first touchdown was set up when Young partially blocked a Heritage punt that put the ball at the War Eagles 30. Six plays later, Sage White rushed in from the 5 for a 7-0 lead with 7:57 left in the first quarter.

Rogers increased the lead to 14-0 with a 73-yard, 12-play drive that ended when Freeland ran 21 yards for the score with 7:35 left in the first half.

Trey Kitterman came in at quarterback for Heritage and the sophomore had runs of 15, 14 and nine yards before Joel Brackett scored from the one to cut the Mounties' lead to 14-6 with just under six minutes left in the first half. But the Mounties mounted another sustained drive and went 73 yards in 11 plays to take a 21-6 lead with 13.4 seconds left in the first half when Sultemeier scored from the one.
