Six-vehicle pileup halted I-49 traffic; driver cited

A six-car pileup resulting in several injuries Friday afternoon on northbound Interstate 49 started when one vehicle struck another from behind approaching slowed traffic in Lowell near the Monroe Avenue exit, setting off a chain reaction, according to a report from Arkansas State Police.

The interstate was blocked for about an hour and a half.

The first vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet pickup, was driven by Robert McCoy, 21, of Green Forest, according to the report. He was injured and taken to Mercy Medical Center in Rogers. He was cited for careless or prohibited driving, according to the news release.

Also injured in the incident were Ricky Hancock, 52, of Springdale, the driver of the second vehicle; Veronica Gomez-Morua, 37, the driver of the third vehicle; and Claudia Josheph, 64, the driver of the fourth vehicle.

The drivers of the fifth and sixth vehicles, an unidentified 17-year-old and Kimberlee Cowan, 52, were uninjured, according to the report.
