UALR's 17-0 run tops Oral Roberts

Shanity James had a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds and the UALR women's basketball team used a 17-0 run en route to a 66-52 victory over Oral Roberts on Tuesday night at the Mabee Center in Tulsa.

Kira Shepard scored 14 points in her first career start for the Trojans, and Alexius Dawn had 11. Keanna Keys added nine points.

UALR (1-2) trailed 28-20 at halftime. Oral Roberts extended its lead to 37-28 with 6:21 left in the third quarter, but the Trojans responded with a 17-0 run. A layup by Keys after a media timeout tied the game at 37-37. James followed with a layup to give the Trojans a 39-37 lead.

Shepard and Dawn each hit three-pointers to cap the run as UALR led 45-37, and it took a 51-41 lead going into the fourth quarter.

UALR shot 41.4 percent (24 of 58) from the floor and outrebounded Oral Roberts 40-30. The Golden Eagles made 19 of 47 (40.4) from the floor and committed 26 turnovers. They were 2 of 9 from three-point range and were held to 36 percent (9 of 25) shooting in the second half.

It was UALR's third consecutive victory against Oral Roberts and Coach Joe Foley's 701st career victory.

Bria Pitts led Oral Roberts with 13 points. Dorottya Balla had 11 points.

The Trojans will face Memphis on Friday at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock.

SWAC MEN

NEBRASKA 67, ARK.-PINE BLUFF 44

Andrew White III and Shavon Shields combined for 23 first-half points to lead Nebraska (4-1) past Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-4) in Lincoln, Neb.

The Cornhuskers pulled away late in the first quarter, holding the Golden Lions without a field goal for the last 8:03 of the half. The Huskers closed the final 4:23 of the half with a 15-3 run, highlighted by Shields' dunk that put the Huskers up 31-15 with 1:40 left.

Nebraska stretched the lead to 22 early in the second half as UAPB's field goal drought continued. Ghiavonni Robinson's three-pointer with 17:06 left cut the lead to 19 points, but UAPB pulled no closer than 17 points the rest of the game.

White, who had 12 in the first half, finished with 16 points and Shields had 15.

Robinson led UAPB with 13 points.

SOUTHLAND WOMEN

CENTRAL ARKANSAS 58, ALCORN STATE 35

Maggie Proffitt led Central Arkansas (3-1) with 18 points as the Sugar Bears took care of Alcorn State (1-2) at the Farris Center in Conway.

Proffitt made four three-pointers and finished 7 of 9 from the floor. She was the only Sugar Bear with at least 10 points. Taylor Baudoin and Jameka Watkins had eight points each for UCA.

UCA led 17-8 after the first quarter and 32-21 going into halftime. The Sugar Bears pulled away in the third quarter and took a 45-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Brianna Tolliver led Alcorn State with 10 points.

SWAC WOMEN

ARK.-PINE BLUFF 63, PHILANDER SMITH 51

Niya Head scored 14 points to help Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-3) beat Philander Smith (5-4) at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

Attirah Munir had 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Lady Lions.

UAPB trailed Philander Smith 27-22 going into halftime but cut the lead to 38-37 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions outscored Philander Smith 26-13 in the fourth quarter.

After shooting 9 of 29 (31 percent) from the floor in the first half, UAPB shot 16 of 32 (50 percent) in the second half. Philander Smith was held to 3-of-25 shooting (12 percent) in the second half.

Brittany Leonard led Philander Smith with 22 points.
