Keenum hit under review

ST. LOUIS — The NFL is investigating whether correct concussion protocol was followed for St. Louis Rams quarterback Case Keenum late in Sunday’s loss at Baltimore.

A league spokesman says Monday that a review was begun after the game “to determine the facts of the injury and why [Keenum] was not removed from the game for the necessary evaluation by a team physician or the unaffiliated neuro-trauma consultant, as required by our concussion protocols.”

That review is continuing Monday through discussions with the Rams and their medical staff, the ATC spotter, game officials, NFL medical advisers, and the players’ union.

Meanwhile, the NFL plans to reinforce the procedures for this week, with three games scheduled for Thanksgiving Day.

The back of Keenum’s helmet slammed into the ground. His hands immediately went toward his head, and he struggled to get up, appearing staggered. But he was allowed to stay in the game.

JETS

Revis, Mangold uncertain

NEW YORK — The New York Jets could be without two of their most significant players when they take on the AFC East-rival Miami Dolphins next weekend.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis is dealing with a concussion, while center Nick Mangold needed six or seven stitches, according to Coach Todd Bowles, to close a deep cut on his right hand Sunday. The injuries leave the statuses of Revis and Mangold uncertain.

Revis was injured in the third quarter of the Jets’ 24-17 loss Sunday and is going through the NFL’s concussion protocol.

“He wasn’t feeling any better today,” Bowles said of his team’s defensive leader.

Revis needs to be cleared before he can practice as the Jets prepare for Miami. Bowles gave no indications whether Revis might be ready in time to play.

In other news, the Jets waived outside linebacker Quinton Coples on Monday, cutting ties with the team’s first-round draft pick in 2012.

The move was a surprise despite Coples’ diminished role in Bowles’ defense. Coples played only five snaps on defense in New York’s 24-17 loss at Houston on Sunday after playing just seven against Buffalo in the previous game.

“He just wasn’t playing,” Bowles said during a conference call. “We didn’t have a spot. We weren’t playing him and he wasn’t getting any time. It was just a business move. It was nothing personal.”

TEXANS

Hoyer will start Sunday

HOUSTON — Brian Hoyer is done with the team’s concussion protocol and will start for the Houston Texans on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Hoyer was injured early in the third quarter on Nov. 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals and sat out on Sunday against the New York Jets.

T.J. Yates took over when Hoyer was hurt against the Bengals and threw the game-winning touchdown in a 10-6 victory. He had two touchdown passes on Sunday to help the Texans to a 24-17 win over the Jets, giving the team three wins in a row for the first time since 2012.

The Texans (5-5) are tied with the Indianapolis Colts for first place in the AFC South.

BRONCOS

Osweiler gets 2nd start

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Peyton Manning flew to Charlotte, N.C., on Monday for a second opinion on his left foot and Denver Broncos Coach Gary Kubiak announced Brock Osweiler would get his second straight start this week.

Manning is dealing with a torn plantar fascia, which prevents him from stepping into his throws. Kubiak said he’s not necessarily worried that Manning would need surgery or that his season is over.

The Broncos (8-2) host Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on Sunday. The Patriots (9-0) host the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

Osweiler won his first NFL start Sunday, throwing for 250 yards and two TDs with no interceptions in Denver’s 17-15 victory at Chicago.
