Basketball: Rogers Heritage sweeps Shiloh Christian

ROGERS -- Shiloh Christian sank the first basket of the game Monday evening in War Eagle Arena, a 3-pointer by senior Ethan Jurik. Not much went right for the Saints after that.

Rogers Heritage responded with a 22-0 run, many in transition, as the War Eagles rolled to a 70-40 win in the season-opener.

Shiloh Christian (0-3): Hutchinson 13, Jurik 8, Turpin 7, Bryant 5, Tune 5, Williams 2.

Rogers Heritage (1-0): Hobbs 16, Breedlove 13, D. Olsen 12, Stanley 7, Moore 7, Casey 5, Warren 3, Kihn 3, T. Olsen 2, Kenny 1, Lowrey 1.

Senior Lexus Hobbs led the charge with a game-high 16 points, including a pair of rim-rattling dunks in Heritage's huge 22-5 opening quarter. Marcus Breedlove added 13 and Dane Olsen 12 for the War Eagles, who got the sportsmanship rule going to start the fourth quarter.

Heritage coach Tom Olsen acknowledged the fast pace is something difference for his team, but so is the ability level of his team.

"We've got some kids that really see the floor well, and we moved the ball up the floor well and played unselfishly in that first quarter," Olsen said. "We really played at a speed that even I was a little shocked at. Lexus got out in transition, and we got some guys dunking the ball and we had a lot of fun.

"We've got some kids that play really well in the open floor, and we have some that can make some 3-point shots. That's kind of our method. A kid like Seth Stanley at 6-6 that can fill and hit a 3 in transition and still get to the basket and also Marcus. And our point guards play like quarterbacks and throw the ball ahead, I think we can be a real special offensive team."

The War Eagles played at a hyper speed that Shiloh Christian just couldn't handle, Saints coach Jacob Skinner said.

"We're trying to play fast," Skinner said. "We're adopting a new philosophy at Shiloh. Tonight was a little bit disappointing. The size of them, the quickness of them, the athletic ability of them and really the basketball skill just really intimidated us a little bit."

Sophomore Jackson Hutchinson was the lone player in double figures for the Saints (0-3) with 13.

Dehring Scudder came up with key plays down the stretch to help the Lady War Eagles hold off Shiloh Christian.

The 5-foot-7 senior grabbed a key offensive rebound off a missed free throw, then made four consecutive free throws in the final minute to give Heritage (1-0) some breathing room.

Heritage led only 27-24 with Amber Turner at the foul line with 61 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Turner missed both free throws, but Scudder grabbed the second miss and drew a foul. She hit both shots, then added two more later to help Heritage hold on for the win. She led all scorers with 12.

Heritage struggled from the foul line, making just 9 of 19 on the night, but the Lady War Eagles made their last six to put the game away.

Shiloh Christian (0-3) trailed much of the second half, but tied the game at 20 on Blaire Taylor's 3-pointer from the corner late in the third quarter. However, Turner scored off a drive and Scudder nailed a jumper to give Heritage the lead back.

Taylor was the only Lady Saints' player in double figures with 11.
