PINE BLUFF -- If murder or other major crime fouls this Thanksgiving Day, the police personally will call the press about it, Mayor Carolyn Robinson said Wednesday. That's part of what she hopes will be a solution to the media's outcry against a new police department policy that makes police reports and records unavailable on weekends and holidays. News organizations contend the policy violates the Freedom of Information Act. The police department and city attorney say it does not.

• A North Little Rock man was in serious condition Monday after his ex-wife shot him in the stomach while he was trying to break into her home in east Little Rock, police said. Police said Donald Melton, 50, drove away from the home at 7105 Fourche Dam Pike after the shooting and later was taken to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center. His ex-wife, Judy Melton, had not been charged in the shooting. Police interviewed the 50-year-old woman and released her pending further investigation. "It will be up to the prosecutor whether charges are warranted," Little Rock police spokesman Sgt. Terry Hastings said. Hastings said Donald Melton was shot in the abdomen and the bullet exited near his spine. Police recovered a .38-caliber Colt revolver from Judy Melton's home, he said.
