Conway Christian KO’s Junction City

JUNCTION CITY — There will be a new state champion in Class 2A for the first time since 2011.

Junction City, which had won the past three Class 2A titles, lost 41-36 to Conway Christian on Friday night in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs at Paul Muse Stadium.

The Eagles trailed the Dragons 36-34 late in the fourth quarter when Seth Smith returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown to give the 5-2A’s No. 2 seed the lead.

Conway Christian(9-3) will host Hazen in a quarterfinal game Friday.

Junction City (7-3) lost its first postseason game since the 2011, when it fell to eventual champion Strong in the Class 2A semifinals.

Quarterback Jakob Henry completed 28 of 48 passes for 355 yards and 4 touchdown for the Eagles. Smith caught 9 passes for 119 yards and 1 touchdown in addition to his kickoff return score. Jon Mark Wood had 6 catches for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns.

C.J. Johnson led Junction City offensively, rushing for 384 yards and 4 touchdowns on 25 carries.
