Pedestrian among 5 state traffic deaths

Five men were killed in recent crashes on Arkansas roads, according to Arkansas State Police reports.

A Jacksonville man died in a single-vehicle crash in Sherwood in Pulaski County on Nov. 6, state police said in a report released Thursday.

Charles Hall, 24, was driving a 2008 Nissan north on Landers Road just north of Briley Road at 1:58 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, which then left the road and hit vehicles parked in a car lot, the report said.

It was raining and roads were wet at the time of the crash.

State police also identified a man killed in a crash while fleeing from a St. Francis County sheriff's deputy Thursday.

T̶o̶d̶d̶ ̶S̶p̶r̶i̶n̶g̶e̶r̶Floyd Malzahn*, 42, of Tonopah, Ariz., was driving a 2002 Nissan Maxima west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40, the report said. A 2014 Freightliner swerved into the median to avoid the Nissan. The Nissan then crashed into a 2015 Freightliner head-on and stopped in the median. Springer was ejected and died at the scene.

The 2015 Freightliner hit the 2014 Freightliner, but neither driver was injured.

State police said Thursday that Springer had been fleeing from a traffic stop.

At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and roads were dry.

A pedestrian from Hot Springs died Friday morning after being hit by a vehicle entering an on-ramp of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway at Albert Pike Road in the Garland County city, according to a report.

Jaythorne Joel Pyle, 21, was crossing the road at 6:18 a.m. when he was hit by a 2005 GMC. The driver of the GMC was not injured and was not named in the report.

At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and roads were dry.

A Branch man died Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Arkansas 41 in Franklin County, state police reported.

Tony Price, 69, was driving a 1995 Chevrolet pickup north on Arkansas 41 around 8 a.m. when the vehicle left the east side of the road, traveled into a ditch, then traveled across the highway, entered the west ditch and hit a tree, the report said.

At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and roads were dry.

A Pocahontas motorcyclist died Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Mcarcher Road in the Randolph County city, state police reported.

Lehman Johnson, 35, was driving a 1979 Kawasaki motorcycle south on Mcarcher Road when he lost control on a curve and hit a tree, the report said. Johnson was pronounced dead at Five Rivers Medical Center in Pocahontas.
