Gunshot wounds boy in school's lot

SULPHUR ROCK -- A boy was shot Wednesday morning when a gun discharged in a vehicle parked at a school campus.

Sulphur Rock Magnet School Principal Stacey Lindsey said a boy who was not a student at her school was shot in the leg before school opened Wednesday. She did not know the boy's name or age.

Police told her there were no "adult witnesses" to the shooting and that it appeared a car pulled into the school parking lot about 6 a.m. A gun went off, striking the boy, but he was not injured seriously.

Independence County sheriff's deputies interviewed the boy at his home, she said.

The school, a math and sciences magnet school for kindergarten through sixth grade, does not open until 7:20 a.m.

The sheriff's office was closed for Veterans Day on Wednesday, and a police dispatcher in Batesville said there were no arrests in the shooting.
