Spa City crash kills ex-state lawmaker

A former state senator from Amity died Sunday from injuries suffered in a May 19 wreck in Hot Springs, Arkansas State Police said.

Alvin Dwiggins, 76, of Amity was driving south in a 2014 Honda Civic in the 1600 block of Higdon Ferry Road, state police reported. Dwiggins' Honda stopped in the turn lane to turn and was struck by a 2014 Toyota Prius traveling north on Higdon Ferry Road.

The impact forced the Honda to hit a 2010 Cadillac SRX that was stopped in a private drive, state police said.

According to Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia, Dwiggins died Sunday at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minn.

Dwiggins served in the state Senate from 1980 to 1986, according to the funeral home.

Conditions were clear and the road was dry at the time of the wreck, state police reported.
