FAYETTEVILLE -- A former Washington County Sheriff's Office deputy pleaded not guilty Wednesday to aggravated assault and terroristic threatening, according to Washington County Circuit Court records.

Steven Hulsey, 43, was arrested last month in connection with the charges after Greenland Police said he fought with and choked his ex-wife, Marketa Hulsey, on April 23.

Each charge is punishable by up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines as a Class D felony. Hulsey's trial is set for Aug. 7.

He resigned April 22 as a corporal in the Sheriff's Office after an internal investigation into whether he committed fraud. Steven Hulsey was with the department for 19 years.

After fighting his wife, Hulsey threatened "suicide by cop" and barricaded himself in a bedroom with loaded weapons, according to an arrest report. He eventually left the bedroom and was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center and arrested three days later.

Investigators also believe Hulsey listed his ex-wife as his current wife in an application for insurance despite divorcing her about a decade earlier. He pleaded not guilty to insurance fraud earlier this month. A trial for that charge is scheduled July 31.

Washington County is suing Hulsey in the circuit court, asking for a court order forcing Hulsey to pay back about $12,000 in benefits for which he wasn't eligible.
