Man arrested in connection with fraudulent $100 bills

Police arrested a Springdale man in connection with forgery after he tried to shoplift at Walmart.

Dispatch logs record a call for police for an armed person at 8:25 p.m. Saturday from Walmart Supercenter, 3919 N. Mall Ave. The man, described as intoxicated, ran from the store toward Arby's, according to the log.

Michael McElroy, 20, of 1551 Oriole St. in Springdale, was arrested Saturday near Joyce Boulevard and Mall Avenue in connection with second-degree forgery, shoplifting and public intoxication, according preliminary police report.

Police found a pocketknife on McElroy and three $100 bills described in the preliminary police report as "clearly fraudulent."

McElroy initially told police he had only been at the restaurant. The man's eyes were dilated, he was sweating, spoke rapidly and had exaggerated reflexes, according to the preliminary police report. Once arrested he told police the currency was fake, but it was not his and admitted to switching tags and concealing items inside the store, throwing them on a bench and running across Joyce.

Walmart staff collected six items McElroy had discarded including a sanding sponge, light, reflex optic, locking hasp and three paint pens, according to the preliminary police report.

McElroy was being held Sunday in the Washington County Detention Center on a $2,500 bond.
