Arkansas Track Hall of Fame inducting six

The Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame will induct six members at the 21st annual induction ceremony June 5 in the Silver City Ballroom of the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock.

Scheduled to be inducted are April Steiner Bennett, Jeff Hartwig, Mike Armstrong, George Eriquezzo, Joe Nooner and Brooks Rice.

Bennett was a three-time All-American in the women’s pole vault at the University of Arkansas and was the first SEC female athlete to clear 13 feet indoors. She finished second at the Pan Am Games in 2007 and in 2008 was a member of the U.S. Olympic team.

Hartwig competed in the pole vault at Arkansas State. He was on the U.S. Olympic team in 1996 and 2008. Hartwig set the American indoor record of 19 feet, 9 inches in 2002.

Armstrong is a track and field and cross country official and clinician. He has officiated at several USA Track and Field, NCAA and SEC championship events.

Eriquezzo set Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference records in the 100- and 220-yard dashes in 1966 while at Southern Arkansas.

Nooner was a former track and field athlete at Conway High School and Hendrix College. He coached track and field for 39 years in Arkansas, including a 35-year run at West Memphis (1975-2009), leading the Blue Devils’ boys team to six state championships.

Rice competed in the sprints, low hurdles, long jump and relays at Camden High School and Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State).

Harding’s Zabrowska finishes second

Harding senior Ewa Zabrowska finished second in the 1,500 meters Saturday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor championships in 4 minutes, 21.43 seconds to earn All-American honors. The time was also a school record, breaking her mark of 4:22.30 at the Mt. SAC Relays this year. Zabrowska passed three runners in the final 400 meters, passing Oliva Watt of Chico State with approximately 100 meters remaining. Staci Foster, from Azusa Pacific, won the race in 4:19.07.

Statistics needed

High school baseball and softball coaches are asked to submit their teams’ final statistics to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Offensive statistics needed include: At-bats, hits, runs, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI and stolen bases. Pitching statistics needed include: Wins, losses, innings pitched, earned runs allowed and strikeouts. Coaches may submit the final statistics by email to: [email protected].
