Firm to aid search for new library chief

An executive search firm will be used to help the William F. Laman Public Library System hire a new executive director, Mayor Joe Smith said.

Smith and members of the library board of trustees met May 15 with Dan Bradbury, managing partner with Bradbury Associates of Kansas City, Mo., to hear the advantages of using his firm, which has experience in landing new jobs for library executive directors.

Smith said he expected a contract to be finalized soon.

The library system hasn't been successful relying only on city resources to find a new director. A requirement for the library head to have a master's degree in library science has hampered the city in finding qualified candidates, Smith has said.

The library trustees voted May 11 to spend up to $18,000 to hire the search firm if the city couldn't come up with a qualified candidate. The job advertises a salary range of $70,000 to $90,000 annually.

The library system consists of the main library, 2801 Orange St., and its Argenta Branch, 420 Main St.

Former Executive Director Jeff Baskin died in September after being diagnosed with cancer just eight weeks earlier.
