Arkansas’ Lopez third at NCAAs

Arkansas’ Gabriela Lopez fired a 2-under-par 70 and was tied for third after the first round of the NCAA Women’s Championship at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.

Lopez was tied with South Carolina’s Katlyn Dambaugh and Southern California’s Annie Park. Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford was the leader at 4 under through 12 holes on a day in which play was delayed twice because of lightning. Emma Talley of Alabama is second at 3 under through 15 holes.

Play was delayed from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Central and was stopped again at 5:48 p.m. At 6:15 p.m., play was suspended for the day with 12 teams on the course.

Arkansas’ Regina Plasencia is 77th after shooting a 77. Alana Uriell is tied for 107th at 80.

As a team, Arkansas shot a 310 and is tied for 20th at 22-over with Wake Forest, which also finished its round, and Tulane, with its players on No. 16-18.

Stanford is the team leader at 3-over 291 with its players on Nos. 11-14. Duke, which finished its round, is second at 5-over 293. Baylor is third at 7 over with its players on Nos. 11-14. Arizona is fifth at 300.

BASEBALL

UALR gets commitment

UALR announced Friday that Cameron Stillwell of Tulsa Union has signed a letter of intent to play for the Trojans.

Stillwell, a 6-0, 160-pound left-handed hitter and infielder, earned the team’s MVP award this season and was named to the 2014 Perfect Game East Cobb All-Offensive Team as well as the 2013 and 2014 Tulsa all-metro teams.

This season, he hit .446 with a .538 on-base percentage with 10 stolen bases and a .951 fielding percentage.

“Cameron is a high-end defending shortstop who we are extremely excited about,” UALR assistant coach Roland Fanning said. “Stillwell is the definition of a ballplayer with an unbelievable baseball bloodline. He is an outstanding student-athlete who will pursue a degree in engineering when he gets to campus.”

Sillwell is the nephew of former major league shortstop Kurt Stillwell, who spent nine seasons in the big leagues with five teams, and his grandfather Ron Stillwell played for the Washington Senators in 1961-1962.

TRACK AND FIELD

Harding’s Syrotchen 11th in discus

Harding sophomore Josh Syrotchen finished 11th in the discus at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships on Friday in Allendale, Mich. Syrtochen had a throw of 175 feet, 3 inches on his first attempt. He fouled on his second attempt and his third went 160-7. The top nine advanced to the final. Syrotchen missed the final by 26 inches. Caniggia Raynor, from Central Missouri, won the event with a throw of 198-1. Harding senior Ewa Zabrowski will compete in the final of the 1,500 at 1:25 p.m. today.

Harding duo earns academic honor

Harding sophomore Lucas Goodspeed and Kevin Naceanceno earned Academic All-District 7 honors Friday. Goodspeed, from Houston, is an accounting major with a 4.0 grade-point average. During the indoor season, he ranked 13th in the mile, 17th in the 800 meters, 22nd in the 3,000 in the Lone Star Conference. Naceanceno is a biochemistry major and molecular biology major with a 3.96 GPA. He finished fourth in the 400 at the conference indoor meet and had the second-fastest 200 time by a Harding runner this season.
