Elm Springs Cemetery Memorial Day service will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Dixon Platt, Elm Springs Methodist minister, will speak during the event.

A cemetery association meeting is set at Silent Grove Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday in the community building next to the cemetery.

Salvation Army

leader retires

The Salvation Army of Northwest Arkansas has announced the retirement of Major NJ Pope, area commander of Northwest Arkansas. Pope has led the command over Washington, Benton, Madison and Carroll counties since September 2013. He will return to retirement on June 14.

Also changing jobs will be Lieutenants Joshua and Ashley Robinett. They have served as the corps officers of the Fayetteville Corps for the past three years. They will assume the responsibility of the Salvation Army Corps and operations in Hot Springs, leaving Fayetteville on June 21.

Appointed as area commanders and corps officers in Northwest Arkansas are Majors Dan and Mary Matthews, who are originally from Richmond, Va.

Area pageant invites women

Young women statewide are invited to compete in the 20th Miss Arkansas Valley's Outstanding Teen Pageant. Contestants must be no younger than 13 years old and no older than 17 years old by July 24.

The pageant is part of the Miss Arkansas system and is sponsored by the Johnson County Peach Festival Association.

Farm Bureau cites teacher

Julie Hathcote, a theme specialist at Chenal Elementary School in Little Rock, is Arkansas Farm Bureau's 2015 Ag in the Classroom Outstanding Teacher.

Farm Bureau established the award in 2006 to recognize teachers who have exemplary programs which integrate agricultural concepts into their curricula.

Hathcote graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 2007 with a master's degree in early childhood education.

Southside High

holds reunion

Southside High School class of 1990 will hold its 25-year reunion June 20 at Christy Comb's Cabin, 800 Torrington Way in Fort Smith. Activities include food, drinks and Rebel fun.

Author's memoir

earns attention

Arkansas native Jenny Barnes Butler's new book Stolen Water, Forgotten Liberties: A True Story of Life Along Arkansas' South Highway 14 and the Buffalo River has been named a finalist in the 2015 Next Generation Indie Awards in the Regional Non-Fiction category.

The Next Generation Indie Book Awards is the largest not-for-profit book awards program for indie authors and independent publishers in the country.

In March of this year Stolen Water, Forgotten Liberties was awarded an honorable mention in the biography/autobiography/memoir category at the 2015 Los Angeles Book Festival.

Butler grew up in Arkansas, graduated from Yellville-Summit High School and has master's degrees in English literature and psychology from the University of Central Arkansas.

Butler's book is published by Hellgate Press (www.hellgatepress.com) of Ashland, Ore.

Students

honored

Arkansas Tech University student Jose Cardiel won best in show in the 2015 Art and Architecture exhibit hosted by the Arkansas Tech Museum. Cardiel is a junior graphic design major from Rogers.

Honorable mention prizes were presented to sophomore art education and graphic design major Kimaly Ballard of Clarksville, sophomore graphic design major Hanna Bauer of Malvern and junior art education major Jessica Smith of Rogers.

The awards were announced during an opening ceremony for the exhibit.

The annual exhibit features watercolors of historic buildings on the Arkansas Tech campus painted by students in the Department of Art. The piece that is judged best in show is purchased by the museum for addition to its permanent collection.

Students win

in cosmetology

For the sixth year, Northwest Arkansas high school cosmetology students dominated the Skills USA annual state competition with 11 medals, including first- and second-places in cosmetology, second- and third-places in esthetics and first place for opening and closing ceremony.

Winners were:

• Cosmetology: First place Shae Pilcher, Springdale High School; and second place Courtney Kittle, Siloam Springs High School

• Esthetics: Second place Heavyn Poole and Hayley Martin, Siloam Springs; and third place Mellissa Faught and Vanessa Salto, Fayetteville High School

• Opening and closing ceremonies: First place Somer Fufrene, Melanie Goff, Baileigh Hawkins, Emma Hot, Carly McCash, Kristen Mootz and Brittany Nemeroff, Rogers/Bentonville High schools.

Skills USA is a national organization for high school students enrolled in a variety of vo-tech courses. High school students are in the 11th and 12th grades. First place winners are eligible for scholarships at area colleges.
