Benintendi named SEC player of the year

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas center fielder Andrew Benintendi has been named the Southeastern Conference player of the year.

Benintendi, a sophomore, led the SEC with a .415 batting average and 17 home runs. He also had 51 RBIs and stole 21 bases.

Benintendi is the first Arkansas player to win the SEC award. He is also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Houser Trophy, which are presented to the nation's best college baseball player.

He is projected to be drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft next month.

The Razorbacks had three other players voted to various all-SEC teams. Pitcher Zach Jackson was first-team all-SEC, pitcher Keaton McKinney was a freshman all-SEC selection and third baseman Bobby Wernes was voted to the league's defensive team.

LSU's Paul Mainieri was voted SEC coach of the year and Vanderbilt's Carson Fulmer was voted pitcher of the year. The awards were voted on by the league's 14 head coaches.
