FAYETTEVILLE -- Bentonville's chances of a fourth consecutive Class 7A girls track championship rested on Katy Kotoucek's legs.

The sophomore pulled it off with little room to spare, passing Cabot's Tori Weeks near the end of the 4x400-meter relay, and the Lady Tigers claimed the title by the slimmest of margins during Thursday's meet at Ramay Junior High. Bentonville finished the meet with 141.5 points, just one-half point more than Cabot, while Fayetteville was third with 116.5.

Bryant won the event with a time of 3 minutes, 56.88 seconds, but the race that had the most attention was between Bentonville and Cabot, which had a 1.5-point lead entering the event. Kotoucek was in third place when she took the baton, but she kept Weeks within range before passing her on the final stretch.

"I didn't really think about anything," Kotoucek said. "When we got to the last 100, the competition was right there. They were so good, and we weren't sure we could win. We had to think that something amazing might happen, and I knew I had to go."

Bentonville's team of Kallie Polk, Merrill Leak, Baylee Barganier and Kotoucek finished second with a time of 4:00.82, while Cabot took third at 4:01.39. That gave the Lady Tigers just enough to push past a Lady Panthers team that was led by Weeks and her twin sister Lexi, who reset her meet record when she cleared 14 feet in the pole vault. Lexi Weeks also won the long jump and the 100 hurdles, while Tori Weeks took the 300 hurdles and the triple jump.

"It was a heck of a day because Cabot has such a good team," Bentonville coach Randy Ramaker said. "Those two Weeks girls -- you're looking at 100 points walking on the track, and we don't have any of those girls.

"We have some girls that will fight and ended it with Kotoucek in the 4x400. That was huge, and the 800 was huge. The shot put was huge, and so was Taylor Mahone winning the 100. Not everything went our way, but we had enough to go our way."

The Lady Tigers team of Kotoucek, Trinity Walker, Sophie Quandt and Victoria Mitchell set a meet record in the 4x800 relay with their time of 9:37.51, breaking the previous mark of 9:45.81 set by Bentonville in 2006. Bentonville, however, still trailed Cabot by a 120-92.5 margin before the Lady Tigers had five finish in the top eight and scored 23 points to pull back into contention.

On the boys side, Bryant used a strong finish to pull away from Bentonville late in the meet and take the team title with 118 points. The Tigers, who entered the meet as the defending state champions, had 103 points, followed by Fayetteville with 94, Rogers High with 83 and Springdale Har-Ber with 81.

The Hornets made their move with a one-three finish in the 200 as Steven Murdock passed Rogers Heritage's Joey Saucier near the end and won with his time of 21.92 seconds. Saucier's time was 22.13, just ahead of Bryant's John Winn was clocked at 22.18.

"We've always been able to finish well this season with our sprinters," Bryant coach Steve Oury said. "We had guys all day, stepping up and turning in season-best times and personal records.

"We knew it would take a perfect meet to have a chance to win, and we did. We basically had a perfect meet."

Saucier was one of three local boys athletes with double wins with his victories in the long jump and the 100. Fayetteville's Blake Young took top honors in both throws, while Har-Ber distance runner TJ Sugg had wins in the 800 and 1,600.
