War markers set for Jasper, Ozark

Newton and Franklin counties will receive Civil War Sesquicentennial Historic Markers approved by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, the panel announced.

The commission works with local partners to tell stories of how the Civil War affected communities within the state. Applications for historical markers and other information on sesquicentennial observances are available at the commission's website arkansascivilwar150.com.

A marker titled "Newton County in the Civil War" will commemorate war activity in that county and will be placed at the Newton County Courthouse in Jasper. The marker is sponsored by the Capt. James Tyrie Wright Chapter No. 6, Military Order of the Stars and Bars.

The Franklin County marker will commemorate "Skirmishes at Roseville," attacks on a Union base in April 1864 in the county. The marker will be located in Ozark on East River Street in front of Riverview Plaza and the Ozark Depot Museum. It is sponsored by Main Street Ozark.

Through April, the commission has approved 121 markers in 66 of the state's 75 counties.
