Heritage sweeps Rogers High

ROGERS -- Kacey Murphy tossed a one-hitter and Rogers Heritage broke open a close game with six runs in the top of the seventh inning as the War Eagles defeated Rogers High 9-2 in the first game of a 7A-West Conference doubleheader Wednesday.

Rogers used two errors to cut the Heritage lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth but the War Eagles recorded six of their 11 hits to blow the game open in the top of the seventh. Logan Easley hit a two-run double while Macauley Sams hit a two-run single as the War Eagles sent 10 players to the plate in the seventh.

"I'm proud of the way our kids responded in the seventh inning," Heritage coach Keith Kilgore said. "We knew Rogers was going to make a run at us because Rogers is well coached and they compete."

Murphy struck out six of the first seven Mounties he faced and the senior finished with 11 strikeouts in going the distance for the win. Murphy only gave up an infield single to Jacob Ivey in the third inning and he walked one after throwing 116 pitches, 79 for strikes.

Rogers scored its two runs in the sixth Heritage after committed two of its five errors in the game. The Mounties left five runners stranded five.

"Murphy competes," Kilgore said. "Every time he goes to the mound, he gives us an opportunity to win."

Chase Kilgore, Ty Harris and Sams had two hits each for Heritage. Harris hit a RBI triple in the first inning as the War Eagles took a 2-0 lead. Sams tripled and scored on a Rogers error as the War Eagles upped the lead to 3-0 in the second inning.

"We were fortunate enough to score a few runs early," Kilgore said. "We haven't been as consistent as we would like to be, but this is the time of the year you want to start hitting well. We just have to keep having the right approach, the right mindset at the plate."

Game 2

Heritage delivered again in the seventh inning as the War Eagles completed the sweep.

Kyle Lamproe hit an RBI single in the seventh to give Heritage a 2-1 lead and Garrett Carmical then walked with the bases loaded to make it a 3-1 game.

Heritage (14-10, 8-6 7A-West) took a 1-0 lead in the second after Dylan Qualls walked before scoring on an error. Rogers tied the game at 1-1 in the third on an RBI single by Kyle Eason.

Rogers (12-15, 4-10) loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but Heritage starter Ty Harris got out of the jam on a groundout. Rogers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and the Mounties had the bases loaded again before Harris ended the game with a strikeout. Rogers left 11 stranded in the game.

"We had a couple of defensive miscues in the seventh in both games where we gave them an out," said Rogers coach Matt Melson. "We had opportunities. Heritage got big hits and we didn't."
