Second Thoughts

It's a tweet and a miss for slugger

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout tried unsuccessfully to use his connections in order to find out about the Philadelphia Eagles’ first-round draft plans.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout tried unsuccessfully to use his connections in order to find out about the Philadelphia Eagles’ first-round draft plans.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is a Philadelphia Eagles fan, and the Eagles went into Thursday night's draft surrounded by a few rumors.

Trout attempted to get to the bottom of them. Since he is a highly connected celebrity, Trout went straight to the top in order to figure out who his favorite team was drafting when he sent ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter a direct Twitter message.

"Mariota to eagles ??? Whatcha think," Trout wrote.

"Eagles' fans of all kinds want answers to the same question," Schefter tweeted in an open message.

That's right, the 2013 American League Most Valuable Player sent an NFL guy with very good credentials a direct message on Twitter looking for some inside information on the draft. It's unclear whether Schefter responded directly, but the Eagles did not get Mariota.

It's hard to blame Trout for trying to use his connections, even if it didn't work out. His favorite team may not have landed the player he wanted, but Trout still managed to have a good day. He reached base four times Thursday and made a game-saving catch in the ninth inning of Anaheim's 6-5 victory over Oakland.

Watch party

An officer at a Philippine electric company has urged customers to turn off major appliances to help prevent power failures that have recently plagued his province so people can watch the much-awaited fight between Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

Palawan Electric Cooperative secretary Rante Ramos said Friday that shutting down refrigerators in 15,000 households alone will reduce the demand for electricity in the province enough to compensate for the expected power deficit of 2 megawatts when the fight is aired in the Philippines on Sunday.

He said air conditioners, washing machines and electric pots also consume a lot of electricity.

"If it is just for the Pacquiao fight, let us just leave electric fans and TVs on," Ramos said. "We have waited so long for this, and now that it will happen ... it is unacceptable not to have the opportunity to watch it.

"This is not only for the fight," Ramos said. "We also want to teach citizens to show concern for fellow citizens, and of course to save electricity."

Gwynn's revenge

San Diego's AleSmith Brewing Co. is preparing to release a limited Hall of Fame version of its popular San Diego .394 Pale Ale on what would have been Tony Gwynn's 55th birthday May 9.

Tom Seaver has his own wine and brings it to the annual Hall of Fame gathering in Cooperstown. Word is that Seaver wouldn't share with any hitter who did well against him, so Gwynn never got any.

That's why he partnered with AleSmith to make his own beer. It was something Gwynn could take to the Hall of Fame gathering, he told AleSmith's owner Peter Zien when they met, something for the hitters.

The first time the Padres outfielder faced the great Mets pitcher, he went 1 for 3, but that hit was an RBI single that drove in the winning run.

So if Tom Terrific was going to withhold his wine, Gwynn figured he'd bring his own beer. In 2014, he invited AleSmith to come up with a brew that he could bring to Cooperstown, but Gwnn died of cancer June 16 before he could have some fun at Seaver's expense.
