New book gives space to architect

BUILDING RECOGNITION: Reese Rowland, an architect with Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects in Little Rock, is included in a recently released book, South: What it Means to be Here in Heart or in Spirit, by author Wendy Nilsen Pollitzer of Beaufort, S.C.

The book is a collection of essays from several prominent Southern citizens, including political commentator James Carville, actress Andie MacDowell and singer Naomi Judd.

Earlier, Rowland was named a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, while Architect magazine named Polk Stanley Wilcox as the No. 28 Best Design Firm in the nation in its annual rankings. The National United States Green Building Council also named the company the Best Midsize Interior Design Firm.

THE REAL DEAL: When the touring production of Million Dollar Quartet performs April 24-26 at the Maumelle Performing Arts Center, some former Sun Studio recording artists also are expected to take the stage. Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers, who hail from Newport, did something similar in 2010 when they joined the cast onstage in Chicago to perform a couple of songs together -- "My Bucket's Got a Hole in it" and Burgess' and the Pacers' hit single, "Red-Headed Woman."

QUITE THE CATCH: Dr. Mamie Parker -- a renowned environmental and motivational speaker, native of Wilmot in Ashley County and member of the Arkansas Outdoor Hall of Fame -- returns to Arkansas for two events in Little Rock on Friday and Saturday.

Parker, a former assistant director of fisheries and habitat conservation for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a board member of the Chesapeake Conservancy, received the Presidential Rank Award of Distinguished Service, the highest honor given to federal employees. Parker now lives in Sterling, Va.

She will speak on overcoming challenges and obstacles in conservation at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center in the River Market District at 6 p.m. Friday. The next day, from 10 a.m. to noon, she'll be the featured speaker at a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workshop for girls at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, 501 W. Ninth St.

Both events are free (the workshop includes lunch), but registration is required. Call (501) 907-0636 or email Hollie Sanders at [email protected] to register.

REV YOUR ENGINES (OR TRY TO): They're back. In case midget wrestling wasn't enough, the powers that be with the Arkansas Travelers have decided to bring back both Clunker Car Night, a promotion started by former manager Bill Valentine, as well as Clunker Boat Night. The boats float Saturday, May 30, while the cars roll Thursday, Aug. 27.
