Hogeye race officials expect 1,800 runners

Almost 2,000 runners are expected to take part today in the 39th Hogeye Marathon in Fayetteville.

Race director Tabby Holmes said officials expect somewhere around 1,800 runners to take part in the event, which include a marathon, a half-marathon, a four-person relay and a 5K.

The marathon course no longer runs through the town of Hogeye following a major course change in 2003. Now it begins at the Fayetteville square and takes runners on the Scull Creek Trail, the Mud Creek Trail and around the Lake Fayetteville Trail before finishing at the Walton Arts Center parking lot on the corner of West and Dickson streets.

The marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. Runners who need more than 6 1/2 hours to complete the course will go off 6:30 a.m.

Race-day registration will be from 5:45 a.m. to 7 a.m. Cost is $100 for the marathon, $80 for the half-marathon and $40 for the 5K.
