Judge improving after zebra attack

SEARCY — The condition of a White County district judge who was seriously injured in a zebra attack has improved, a hospital spokesman said.

Lee Hogan of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences told The Daily Citizen that District Judge Mark Derrick is in good condition.

Court Clerk Misty Perkins had said the judge suffered eye and arm injuries in the March 15 attack at his home. Perkins said Derrick’s court cases for the rest of March were rescheduled.

The newspaper reported that the zebra is believed to be owned by Derrick’s father.

A spokesman for the Searcy Police Department said he was told by animal control officers that keeping a zebra isn’t a violation of a 2006 city ordinance against wild animals.
