Rumor leads to increased security at Springdale school

SPRINGDALE -- Springdale High School will have a larger police presence today after officials found a rumor on social media.

Facebook posts indicated the possibility of a threat on the campus, said Rick Schaeffer, communications director for the School District.

Pete Joenks, school principal, sent an email to his staff explaining the situation. Joenks wrote the rumor said "one of the groups involved in the tragic shooting that occurred last week is going to take retribution on their rival."

This comes after a shooting March 13 at 32 Applegate Drive. The shooting ended with the death of one person and the arrest of another. Two other people also went to a Springdale hospital because of the shooting.

District officials are always aware of students' safety, said Jared Cleveland, assistant superintendent for personnel. Officials are on higher alert at the moment because of the recent shooting.

Joenks also included information about increased police presence and instructions for his staff.

"As a precaution I have asked for an additional SRO to be present on our campus tomorrow and an increase in the frequency of patrols around our campus," he wrote.

"The SPD has indicated they will have an increased footprint in and around SHS. I need your help by making sure you are out in the hallways between classes moving students on to class. If you should see any students that you are not familiar with you should ask for an ID and/or call the office for an administrator."

No further information was available Thursday.
