Bentonville High School student injured by bus

A Bentonville High School student was injured after being hit by a school bus Friday morning, according to the Bentonville police.

The student sustained "non-life-threatening injuries" and was treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital, said Paul Stolt, spokesman for the School District. He declined to disclose the student’s name.

The accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on Southeast J Street, right in front of the high school. A preliminary investigation by police determined a 17-year-old boy was walking away from the school and crossed J Street just south of Southeast 18th Street. He ran in between northbound traffic that was stopped on J Street, according to a Bentonville Police Department news release. This northbound traffic consisted of several school buses.

The bus involved in the accident had just made a right turn from 18th Street to travel south on J Street. The student crossed between the northbound vehicles before colliding with the left-hand side of the southbound bus, according to police.

There is a crosswalk at J Street and 18th Street, just north of where the accident occurred, “but it was not related to this accident,” the news release stated. Information obtained from the bus showed it wasn’t going more than 10 mph at the time of the accident, Stolt said.

Bentonville police interviewed students on the bus, Stolt said. No one else was injured, he said.

The accident is under investigation, according to police.
