UA’s Jackson on All-SEC 2nd team

Arkansas sophomore forward Jessica Jackson was named to the All-SEC second team, the conference announced in a release Tuesday.

Jackson, of Jacksonville, is fourth in the SEC in scoring with an average of 14.6 points per game. She also averaged 6.3 rebounds per game for the Razorbacks, who are the ninth seed in this week’s SEC Women’s Tournament. Arkansas (16-12) will play eighth seed Ole Miss at noon Thursday in a second-round game at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.

South Carolina’s Tiffany Mitchell repeated as player of the year and teammate A’ja Wilson was named freshman of the year. Texas A&M’s Jordan Jones was named defensive player of the year for the second consecutive year, while Kentucky’s Jennifer O’Neill repeated as the sixth woman of the year. Aleighsa Welch of South Carolina was named scholar-athlete of the year.

Mississippi State’s Vic Schaefer and South Carolina’s Dawn Staley were named co-coach of the year. Staley’s Gamecocks are 27-2 and earned a share of the SEC regular-season title with Tennessee. Schaefer, a former Arkansas assistant under Gary Blair in 1997-2003, guided the Bulldogs to a No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament in his third season in Starkville. It’s the first time in SEC history that co-coaches have been named.

Selections were chosen by the league’s 14 coaches. Ties were not broken.
