UAPB knocks off Mississippi State

Andre Davis’ bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and Arkansas-Pine Bluff held on to beat No. 9 Mississippi State 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville, Miss.

It was the Bulldogs’ (13-1) first loss of the season.

Josh Cassidy began the Golden Lions’ rally with a one-out single. He was sacrificed to second by Tommy Haas before Rashawn Tillman singled to put runners at first and third. Tillman stole second, then Westi Hinkel was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Davis walked on four consecutive pitches to bring in Cassidy for a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Reid Humphreys singled with two outs, but UAPB reliever Kevin Walsh got out Ryan Gridley to ground out to end the game.

Vladmir Gomez had a two-run single that gave UAPB a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Tillman went 2 for 4 to lead the Golden Lions (3-6).

Davis (1-0) allowed no runs (2 unearned) on 2 hits and struck out 2 in 4 innings.

Seth Heck had two of Mississippi State’s six hits, including a RBI single as part of the Bulldogs’ two-run inning.

OKLAHOMA 22, UALR 0

Oklahoma pounded out 23 hits and scored in seven of eight innings Tuesday afternoon as the Sooners ended a four-game losing streak to UALR in Norman, Okla.

Craig Aiken went 6 of 7 with 6 RBI for the Sooners (10-5), while Chris Shaw went 3 for 4 and scored 5 runs and Quin Walbergh went 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored. Sheldon Neuse had five RBI and scored three runs.

Oklahoma was 12 for 24 with runners in scoring position, and Aiken, Neuse and Shaw each hit home runs.

UALR starter Cameron Allen gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in 1 inning, and four other UALR pitches allowed runs. Oklahoma scored 3 runs in the first, 4 in the second, 1 in the fourth, 2 in the fifth, 4 in the sixth, 3 in the seventh and 5 in the eighth.

UALR (3-5) was held to five hits, and no Trojan had more than one.
