Basketball: Greenland girls win regional title

Kiana Thompson scored a game-high 17 points as Greenland routed Paris 61-31 to win the Class 3A Region 1 girls tournament Monday.

The Lady Pirates (29-2) won their 17th consecutive game and captured their third regional title in four years with the convincing, mercy rule victory.

The finals of the tournament was delayed after a wintry blast forced tournament officials to moved games on both Friday and Saturday.

Greenland took control early as has become the norm during its winning streak, jumping out to a 19-8 lead after a quarter that swelled to 39-17 at halftime en route to the blowout win.

"We played really good," Greenland coach Alan Barton said. "Our defense was on point. We knew that they had three girls we needed to guard. And we guarded them well and stayed out of foul trouble and knocked some big shots down."

Thompson led the way, but the Lady Pirates got contributions across the board. Sophomore McKayla Redmond scored 11 points, while Kim Crown and Kelsey Vaughn added 10 each.

"McKayla Redmond opened it up with some threes," Barton said. "Kelsey Vaughn, then you've got Kim and Kiana down there, so it was a total team effort. And then you bring those other five off the bench that want to play defense. So it was a real good effort."

The Lady Pirates will open the state tournament against Region 2 No. 4 seed Cedar Ridge at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cossatot River High School.

Lamar 48, West Fork 46

The 3A-4 champion Lamar jumped to a 22-6 lead, but had to hold off a big rally by the Lady Tigers on Monday in the consolation game.

West Fork (20-12), the third seed from the 3A-1 West, will now face Region 2 champion Harding Academy tonight at 7 at Cossatot River in the first round of the state tournament.

Dara Smith led West Fork with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, while Holly Griffin added 15.
