Planning Canada trip requires doing research

The way his group does it, Chris Fuller says an eight-day fishing trip to northern Ontario costs about $2,000.

They cut costs by tent camping at Abrams Lake Park in Sioux Lookout. The tent sites have water and electricity. Showers are also available. Renting a cabin for a week costs $1,500-$2,000, he said.

They buy all their food before they enter Canada, but Fuller said visitors must be aware of restrictions. Because of avian flu, for example, you can't bring poultry into the country. One year there was a restriction on potatoes, Fuller said. Everyone entering the country had to leave all of their potatoes in a bin at the border.

Gasoline costs about $4.50 per gallon in Canada, so the Fullers bring their own. He said he usually has to refuel about eight times between Fayetteville and Sioux Lookout.

An eight-day Conservation fishing license costs $30.53. An eight-day Sport Fishing License, which entitles you to keep more fish, costs $53.54. Non-residents must also buy an Outdoors Card for $9.68.

A passport is required to cross the border. Fuller said his group also buys supplemental Canadian auto insurance.
