Springdale shooting injures teen boy; no arrests made Thursday, police say

SPRINGDALE -- A boy riding a bicycle at Crawford Avenue and Marylyn Street was shot and taken to Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville around 6:20 p.m. Thursday, said Lt. Scott Lewis, Springdale Police Department spokesman.

The boy wasn't dead but was shot at least once, police said. Lewis wouldn't say how many times the boy was shot.

Police wouldn't release the teen's condition, name, age or address Thursday. The boy didn't live at the house where he was shot, Lewis said.

Neighbors gathered on the street Thursday evening to watch. Detectives searched the yard and questioned nearby residents asking if they had heard or seen anything. Police cars blocked off streets for hours.

Police hadn't found the gun used in the shooting by 9 p.m. Thursday, Lewis said.

Most neighbors said they didn't know anything about the shooting. Several people said the neighborhood had been marked by gang graffiti many times previously.

Springdale residents have said they are worried about gang activity. Two men were shot to death in gang-related shootings in March and April. Two other people, including a 14-year-old boy, were injured.

Police have made arrests in those two shooting cases.

Lewis said Thursday he didn't know whether the most-recent shooting is gang related. No one had been arrested in connection with the boy's shooting, he said.

Police believe a fight that broke out shortly before the shooting may be related because the fight happened nearby and roughly minutes apart, Lewis said.

A fight was reported at 6:22 p.m. Thursday at the Kum & Go convenience store at 1010 N. Thompson St. just blocks from where the boy was shot. Three minutes after the fight, someone reported seeing a person with a gun at 1006 Marylyn St., according to dispatch records.

Two males were arrested Thursday in connection with the fight, Lewis said.

Police didn't know the ages of the people arrested Thursday, Lewis said. Names of people arrested in connection with the fight weren't released Thursday.

Two employees at the convenience store said they knew about the fight but wouldn't talk about it Thursday.
