Man dies after being struck by lightning at Beaver Lake

A 22-year-old man was killed after being struck by lightning near Indian Creek on Beaver Lake on Saturday afternoon, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

"Him and his wife were out in a boat with a striper guide," Keshia Guyll, sheriff office spokesman, said. "It started raining so they were trying to head back."

The incident occurred about 4 p.m., Guyll said. She said the man was pronounced dead at about 4:50 p.m. after being transported to Northwest Arkansas Medical Center-Bentonville.

Guyll said the identity of the man could not be released Saturday until family is notified.

Alan Bland, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ranger, said the incident was still under investigation late Saturday. He said it's possible that lightning hit a metal rod on the boat near were the man was sitting.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene, Bland said, adding that the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are investigating the incident.
