ROGERS -- The Arkansas Arts Academy's School Board approved a contract extension for chief executive officer Mary Ley at its meeting Tuesday.

Ley started as the charter school's leader July 1. Her initial contract was for three years at an annual salary of $103,000. The board extended that contract by a year and added $500 to her salary, Ley said.

"I am really thankful. I think we're going in a real positive direction," she said.

The board also approved hiring 16 staff members. Ley said she's impressed by their qualifications and the fact they were willing to accept less money to work at Arkansas Arts Academy than they might have been able to make at a local school district.

"I'm amazed at the talent pool we were able to pull from," she said.

Arkansas Arts Academy, formerly known as Benton County School of the Arts, expects to enroll 825 students in grades kindergarten through 12 when the next school year begins in August.
