FAYETTEVILLE -- Jasmine Franklin certainly made the most of her brief appearance with the Fayetteville girls varsity track and field team this spring.

Franklin spent most of the season competing at the ninth grade junior high level for Fayetteville Woodland, where she won both the shot put and discus conference titles. Once the junior high season was complete, a move up to the high school to participate at the 7A-Conference and Class 7A state meets was a given for this freshman.

Franklin didn't expect all that much when she entered the high school varsity competition. But her performance right from the start was second to none and was worthy of Franklin being named All-NWADG Girls Track and Field Newcomer of the Year.

With a shot put throw of 40 feet, 7.50 inches, Franklin not only scored at the 7A-West Conference meet, she won the event. A discus mark of 127-4 earned her second place honors as well at the conference event.

"I was just hoping to put some points on the board and go up there and get somewhere in the top 10," Franklin said. "I didn't expect to go up there and go all the way and win."

Then came the 7A State meet, where Franklin kept up her winning ways, with a 41-5.25 shot put toss for another victory, in just her second meet at the high school level.

Franklin also added a 112-11 throw in the discus at the state meet, earning her another second-place finish.

"This definitely makes me want to keep going and want to keep setting my goal higher," Franklin said. "I just keep feeling hungrier and want to keep setting my PR even higher and higher and help us win."
