• After a chase of about 10 blocks, Vernon Green, 18, son of J. C. Green, 3924 West Fourteenth street, was captured on request of the father and taken to the State Hospital for Nervous Diseases as an inmate of the institution. Jailer Clifton Evans and Assistant Jailer J. H. Hicks effected the capture, after the youth eluded his father when the latter attempted to return him to the state hospital. The young man was sent to the institution some time ago and was thought to have been cured. He was released on request of his mother. Officers say he is not violently insane, but obsessed with some peculiar ideas.

NEWPORT -- Governor Faubus, in dedicating the Jacksonport State Park Saturday, said that unless his pay-as-you-go road building program was passed by the special session of the legislature, "we cannot build the road leading to this park or any others." "I have been criticized for saying that if you want roads, they [legislators] must vote for this program, but I mean just that. If a member of the legislature doesn't support this program, it does indicate to me that he doesn't feel the need for roads."

SEARCY -- Paul R. Johnson says he was fired from the White County road department May 25 because he refused to support the county judge in his bid for re-election. County Judge Gerald Parish, a Republican, told him he could now campaign fulltime for his opponent in the November general election because he no longer had a job, said Johnson, 56, of Steprock.

• The National Transportation Safety Board says it will stand by a report blaming pilot error for the 1999 crash of an American Airlines jet and likely ignore a jury's decision to fault Little Rock National Airport, Adams Field, and a runway that didn't fully meet safety guidelines. Federal court jurors on Thursday awarded the widow of Capt. Richard Buschmann more than $2.1 million after her lawyers argued conditions at the airport, not Buschmann's decision to land in a severe thunderstorm, were the main cause of his death. Ten others also were killed. The NTSB said its conclusions were reached by aviation experts -- as opposed to 11 random people from varied backgrounds. A 12th juror was earlier dismissed.
