August: A Month Of Visual Art Events

AUG. 2

Van Buren Photography -- Photographer J. P. Bell will share his photo collection of Van Buren and Martin Duckworth will present a collection of his work exploring the boundaries beyond Van Buren at the Center for Art & Education in Van Buren. At the opening reception from 1 to 4 p.m., Bell will present his video and lecture on "The Evolution of Photography," a talk designed to be accessible to non-specialists and anyone interested in the visual arts. Also opening this day is the "Van Buren on Camera" exhibit, which features the work of local amateur photographers. Exhibit is on display through Aug. 26. Free. 747-7767.

AUG. 15

Call for Entries -- The Holiday Island Association of the Arts Art Guild is calling for entries for the 27th Annual Art Exhibit and Sale taking place at the end of August. There will be four categories for entries: Works on Paper, Works on Canvas or Fabric, Mixed Media and Photography. An artist may submit up to three entries in each category. All entries must be received no later than Aug. 15 and may not have been entered in a prior H.I.A. of A. show. Price of submission is $25 for up to three entries in each category for H.I.A. of A. members and $35 for up to three entries for nonmembers. For information or entry forms, email [email protected].

Adult Artist Competition -- The Center for Art & Education is hosting its 38th Annual Adult Artist Competition. Submissions will be accepted 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug 19-21. The judged art competition is open to adults 18 and over and submitted work must be original. Each artist may enter up to three works. Exhibit will be held in September. art-ed.org. 474-7767.

Stained Glass & Mosaics -- Heartwood Gallery will be showcasing Stained Glass and Mosaics from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 22. Meet the artisans and watch how these amazing works are created. Hank Barnes, Vanessa Ryerse, Stephanie Tempest, Janet Greeson and Anita Hejtmanek are featured. Free. 444-0888.

"Traveling Waterways" -- White River Memoirs, a traveling art exhibit celebrating life along one of the nation's most spectacular waterways, is coming to Northwest Arkansas at the Windgate Art Gallery in Cave Springs.

The White River Memoirs exhibit opens with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Windgate Art Gallery in the Illinois River Watershed Learning Center, 221 S. Main St. author and photographer Chris Engholm curated the exhibit, which is an expanded multi-media exhibit of artwork, objects, video and photography, while traveling the river through Arkansas and Missouri in a handmade canoe.

The art gallery and Watershed Learning Center are open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon. -- Fri., and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sat. 238-4671.

Art in the Park -- The featured artist for August for the Springdale Public Library Art in the Park Summer Exhibit is Katy Kane. Reception will 5-6 p.m. Aug. 10 and Kane's work will be displayed in the Library Gallery through Aug. 31. Free.

Contemporary Works at Fayetteville Underground -- "Ozark Artistry: Tradition and Contemporary Craftsmanship," a group show focused on well-made contemporary works of regionally-based art curated by local poet and folklorist Willi Goehring, will be on exhibit at the Fayetteville Underground from Aug. 5 to 30. The free First Thursday opening will take place Aug. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. and will feature snacks, refreshments, and music. The main presentations will be a retrospective of the late Winslow artist Tim West and Amber Imrie's thread installation "Buffalo," along with several other artists highlighting quality work in the region. 871-2722.

Thesis Art Show -- Local artist Jeannie Stone invites the traveling public to view her thesis art show, "Carry Me Home," located on the concourse at Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA). Featuring a dozen Arkansas landscape paintings rendered in oil, acrylic and pastel, the exhibit fulfills the requirements of the Master of Liberal Arts degree conferred to Stone by Arkansas Tech University and will be on display through May. Although the concourse is accessible only for ticketed travelers, those interested in viewing the works, but not traveling through XNA, may view the exhibit on the artist's website at jeanniestone.com or secure more information by calling 747-0210.

"Motorcycle Memories" -- Features vintage motorcycles and photographs exploring the "art of the motorcycle" from the 1940s through present day, through Aug. 30, Fort Smith Museum of History. $5 adults, $2 children. 783-7841.

"American Encounters: The Simple Pleasures of Still Life" -- Shown as part of a collaboration among the High Museum, the Terra Foundation for American Art & the Musee du Louvre, through Sept. 14, Crystal Bridges Museum. Free. crystalbridges.org.

"Explore Arkansas" -- The ArkMoPhs (Arkansas Mobile Phoneographers) second annual exhibit, through Aug. 31, Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, features photos taken and edited with smartphones.
