The curious case of Chris Daniels and the University of Arkansas now at least has some clarification.
Daniels is a 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from Euless (Texas) Trinity with family in Arkansas and a multitude of elite offers that now total 22.
Those include his top 10 of Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, TCU, Oklahoma, Baylor, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Miami and Washington, but not one from the Razorbacks to this point.
It certainly would be accurate to say he is the one recruit without an Arkansas offer that Razorbacks fans show more angst over in the 2016 class.
Ironically, Daniels spent the entire week in Fayetteville last week while visiting family, taking an ACT prep class and checking out the Razorbacks' program.
"I really loved being around the coaches and the players and checking out the facilities," Daniels said Tuesday night. "I got a chance to see how the coaches work because they had a camp. It was just a really nice visit."
Daniels, who plans to major in theater arts and drama, was supposed to meet with Arkansas coach Bret Bielema on Friday, but he was unable to do so.
"I had to leave before I was able to talk with coach Bielema (on Friday), but I was very impressed with how he does things and how he runs such an old school program and does things a certain way," Daniels said. "They have a great program."
So why no offer yet from Arkansas?
"What the coaches told me is that they want to see how I improve on this next ACT," Daniels said. "I understand that. They don't have as many scholarships as they usually have so I know that is a factor."
Daniels, who has an unofficial visit to Michigan scheduled in early August, is close to narrowing his list.
He has been to Alabama, TCU, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Oklahoma State, the latter two pushing their way into that top 10 for unofficial visits this summer.
"I think I am going to cut it down to a top five pretty soon and just go from there," Daniels said.
Arkansas' inclusion in that top five is based simply one thing: an offer.
"Obviously if Arkansas hasn't offered by then, they would not be in my top five," Daniels said. "That just makes sense.
"But if they do offer, Arkansas will be right there at the top. I would really love to have an offer, and I think it is going to happen."
Daniels had 45 tackles with seven sacks last season.
Trinity coach John Thompson is impressed with his star both on and off the field.
"Chris is a great player, great speed and has good work ethic," Thompson told the Dallas Morning News. "Great kid off the field (who) is maturing right in front of our eyes. He will be the anchor of our defense, and expectations are high with him."
