Tours of battlefield to begin Saturday

A tour of the Elkins Ferry Battlefield on Saturday will be the first of two Civil War history tours scheduled in the Nevada County area in August, the Nevada County Depot and Museum announced.

The tours are meant to raise awareness for the preservation of Civil War battlefields in the area, particularly the Save Elkins Ferry project. The battle at Elkins Ferry was part of the Red River Campaign of 1864 that also included battles at Prairie D'Ane and Moscow Church.

Admission to each tour is $20 per person and includes a meal. Seating is limited.

Saturday's 5:30-8 p.m. tour will be of the Elkins Ferry Battlefield where Union and Confederate soldiers fought April 2-3, 1864, on the Little Missouri River. Mark Christ, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program's outreach coordinator, will act as tour guide.

The tour will be followed by an evening meal at the Prescott First United Methodist Church, 125 W. Second St., Prescott, and a presentation by Tom Dupree of the Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission on the Reed's Bridge Battlefield in Jacksonville.

The other tour, set for Aug. 22, will be about Prescott's Moscow Church and the Archaeological Richness of Civil War sites, according to the news release.
