Shaquanna Shlae Staten, 26, was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Latosha Lewis. The two lived at Shorter College Gardens Apartments at 800 N. Beech St., police said.

Officers responded to the apartments about 9:52 p.m. Monday and found Lewis, 25, lying on the ground outside Building 15. She had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators spoke to witnesses and developed Staten as a suspect, police reported. U.S. marshals arrested her Tuesday morning in Sherwood. Details of the arrest weren't immediately available.

Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Dedrick said late Tuesday afternoon that investigators had interviewed Staten, but he hadn't received information on a motive in the killing.

A full report on the shooting hadn't been completed, Dedrick said.

Residents of the apartment complex located east of Interstate 30 declined to speak to a Democrat-Gazette reporter Tuesday morning. Records show Staten lived on the north side of the complex in Building 16, next to the building where Lewis was slain.

Staten, who has a 2008 conviction for felony criminal mischief, faces unrelated charges of failure to appear and failure to pay in Pulaski County, Jacksonville and Sherwood courts.

She was being held in the Pulaski County jail late Tuesday.

Lewis' death is the second homicide in seven months at the complex. Alex Booker, 27, was found shot to death between two housing units on the northeast corner of the complex Christmas Eve. Police arrested a parolee, Tyrus Lamont Jones, 26, of North Little Rock. He was charged with first-degree murder.

Police records show 46 criminal reports were taken last year at the complex, a 10.73-acre property with 196 apartments.

As of July 21, police had logged 27 criminal reports at the property this year. Almost half, 13, were listed as battery or assault. Others involved drugs, guns and stolen or damaged property.
