ANGELS

Trout injures wrist

HOUSTON -- Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout was out of the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Houston Astros because of an injured left wrist.

The All-Star center fielder was hurt attempting to make a diving catch in the fourth inning on Sunday but stayed in the game and later hit a grand slam.

Trout leads the majors with 31 home runs and is hitting .315 with 64 RBI.

Tuesday was the first game of a three-game series between the top teams in the American League-West.

In other Angels news, outfielder Matt Joyce has been placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list after colliding with Erick Aybar on Sunday.

Joyce's move is retroactive to Monday. He lost consciousness when Aybar's knee hit his chin while they chased a popup in shallow left field in the fourth inning of the AL West-leading Angels' 13-7 victory.

Joyce is batting .178 with 5 home runs and 21 RBI in a dismal first season with Los Angeles.

MARLINS

Alvarez out for season

MIAMI -- All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon was activated from the disabled list by the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, the same day that the team announced that Henderson Alvarez had season-ending shoulder surgery.

Alvarez pitched a no-hitter in 2013 and was an All-Star last year. He finishes this season 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA, and hadn't pitched since May 22. He was shut down twice with shoulder inflammation.

Marlins Manager Dan Jennings says doctors found a tear in Alvarez's shoulder but did not have any other specifics, including potential recovery time.

To make room for Gordon, the Marlins put infielder Donovan Solano on paternity leave. Gordon has not played since dislocating his left thumb on July 11. He entered Tuesday ranked second in the NL in batting average (.338) and steals (33).

METS

Mejia suspended again

NEW YORK — Just back from an 80-game drug suspension, New York Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia has been banned for an additional 162 games following a positive test for Stanozolol and Boldenone.

Mejia was suspended April 11 following a positive test for Stanozolol and said in a statement then, “I can honestly say I have no idea how a banned substance ended up in my system.”

He returned July 12 and was 1-0 in seven games, pitching 7 1/3 scoreless innings. Because of the first suspension, he would have been ineligible for the postseason, if the Mets make it that far.

The Mets said in a statement Tuesday they were “extremely disappointed.” New York acquired reliever Tyler Clippard from Oakland on Monday.

RED SOX

Betts takes tumble

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox center fielder Mookie Betts was injured Tuesday in the sixth inning when he tumbled into Boston's bullpen while attempting to catch a drive by Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox that went for a home run.

Betts was initially credited with catching the ball while twisting his body and hitting the wall with his lower back, then flipping over and landing in the bullpen.

The ball came out and after a video review of nearly three minutes, Abreu was credited with a two-run home run that gave the White Sox a 7-2 lead Tuesday night.

Boston's training staff attended to Betts outside the Red Sox dugout as the play was reviewed. Betts was replaced by Rusney Castillo.
