RUSSELLVILLE --Although the Pope County Democratic Central Committee today canvassed the returns from the special election held last Saturday to nominate a successor for circuit judge to succeed the late Jesse M. Martin, the result will not be announced until Monday, when the Judicial Committee of the district meets in Danville to canvas returns from the four counties in the district.

• Mrs. Floyd Rogers of Route 6, North Little Rock, said Saturday that about $64 worth of flowers had been stolen from her husband's grave at Edgewood Cemetery some time between July 3 and Saturday. She had been at the Cemetery the afternoon of July 3, she said, and when she went back the next day four pots of flowers were gone. Mrs. Rogers said she sent some more flowers to the grave and that when she went to the Cemetery Saturday afternoon they were gone, too. Her husband died less than a year ago, she said.

• Stoplights are multiplying and developments are booming in the fastest-growing city in Pulaski County. But Maumelle is not so big that the average resident can't find a place in line at the Fourth of July dunking booth to douse a favorite city official. "It's the first time I've lived in a community where people know each other," said Rena Pederson, a 5-year resident of Maumelle's Country Club of Arkansas subdivision. "We know our neighbors. We know the police chief. We know the fire chief, and we know the name of his dog." Maumelle's small-town feel has caught on, and its estimated population has grown from 10,557 in 2000 to 13,273 in 2004 -- a nearly 26 percent increase, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2005, as the city enters its 20th year of incorporation, Metroplan, the regional planning agency, estimates the population is even higher -- about 14,500.
