NWA LETTERS

Finding his bliss

As I sit here and think great thoughts, another gossamer spirit has formed into something of form and substance among the spider webs of my mind, so I feel permitted to commit it to writing. It has to do with appreciation of music and art.

I believe people like me who have little music or art education are the lucky ones. My adult children and granddaughter had some music training by participating in band and choir in school. They were enthusiastic then, but after that they put away their instruments and show no interest in resuming. They still love music, but do not voluntarily go with me to symphony concerts (maybe they don’t want to be seen with a known eccentric).

When they listen to music, they must be evaluating the technical precision of the musicians. I, on the other hand, just enjoy the music with no concern for technique. I have never abandoned the mandolin I have owned since age 10, although I have never learned to play it. It has a name and is loved.

The same can be said of magic shows. A magician in the audience must be analyzing how a trick is done and with what skill, but I can be amazed and delighted without knowing how doves appear out of thin air. In like manner, I can react emotionally to a painting without analyzing the kind of paint, kind of canvas, or genre. I don’t have to keep it a secret that I like Norman Rockwell’s paintings for the Saturday Evening Post. It’s another of example of ignorance is bliss.

Headline overstated ‘celebration’

We disagree with your headline, “NWA celebrates ruling,” in the June 28 newspaper. If you will recall, Arkansas voted on this issue and did not approve the same-sex marriage licensing in our state. We can assure you that same majority was not celebrating the Supreme Court’s ruling. Don’t forget abortions and open sale of alcohol. What’s next, banning sales of Bibles and closing all the churches? At this rate, the United States will soon become a Socialistic nation. God help us.
