Police: Two arrested in connection with Springdale shooting

SPRINGDALE — Police arrested Wednesday two men they said are involved in the shooting of a 14-year-old boy last week near Marylyn Street and Crawford Avenue, according to a news release Wednesday evening.

Jose Yanez, 18, of 601 W. Easy St. in Rogers, was arrested in connection with accomplice to attempted capital murder, two counts of aggravated assault and engaging in a continuing criminal gang, organization or enterprise.

Less than an hour later, Hector Vega, 20, of Lowell turned himself in to police and was arrested in connection with attempted capital murder, a felon in possession of a firearm and engaging in a continuing criminal gang, organization or enterprise.

Police believe Yanez drove a silver vehicle from which witnesses said someone shot the boy while the boy was riding his bicycle at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, June 25, according to police documents.

The boy was shot twice and taken to Washington Regional Medical Center, according to police documents.

No update was given Thursday on the boy’s condition. Police spokesman Lt. Scott Lewis said in a message Thursday he couldn’t release information about the boy because the boy is under the age of 18.

Witnesses said they saw the silver vehicle at both the shooting and at a fight that broke out minutes before at the Kum and Go gas station and convenience store, located at 1010 N. Thompson St., according to police documents.

Lewis said Thursday the fight and the shooting are related. Police had sought Vega since at least Friday, June 26, when Lewis released a news release asking people to help police find Vega.

The two men’s previous criminal histories were not readily available Thursday evening, Lewis said.

Yanez was at the Springdale city jail Thursday, according to the police log. Vega was not yet listed.
